breakfast @ gunther tootie’s — french toast bagel with honey walnut cream cheese. despite the weird, hokey name, this place is great: super fresh bagels with really flavorful cream cheese. mmmm.

theweightlossofrena asked: I think running will be better. I think I like cardio more than anything. Resistance is rather boring to me. Plus I'm trying to go into the Navy later this year.
yeah, i agree, you can get great results that way. i had a lot of success losing about 1 pound a week (when i was already in my upper 130s and staying away from muffins and cupcakes) running about 30-35 miles a week. but don’t neglect the resistance training if you’re trying to join the navy. running will make you skinny, but weightlifting will make you buff! i found rock climbing a lot more effective than simple weightlifting/ordinary resistance training and a LOT more interesting, but it’s also usually more expensive than the regular bare-bones gym membership.

theweightlossofrena asked: I do cardio and resistance. Should I do more cardio? I normally do an hour of it.
that’s a lot of cardio! how much intensity are you putting into it? i’m hesitant to suggest that you start running since it might be hard on the knees, but it’s definitely a very effective way of burning fat. then again, maybe your doctor’s scale is just BROKEN.

a week of biking and other goodness
- sunday - 6.4 miles
- monday - 3.1 miles + physical therapy
- tuesday - 4.9 miles
- wednesday - 5.5 miles + chest/abs at the gym
- thursday - 9.0 miles
- friday - 5.1 miles + physical therapy, cut my ride short because of the rain
- saturday - 10 miles
(not counting random errands — a mile here and there)
ok, so i’m pretty sure i’ll be ready to roll for the sprint distance version of the pgh triathlon in 2011 — the only thing i *haven’t* done of the triathlon is the 20km bike ride (ironically, i think i’ve run longer distances than i’ve ever biked, unless my ride from 5dk to my apartment in chaoyang that one time in 2008 was like 13 miles) but considering i was just two miles short today, i think i’ll be able to swing it. maybe i’ll bump up to the international distance tri?(!?!?)
i test-rode a fairly easy/straight-forward route home from boston (as in easy to navigate; the road conditions were only so-so), but i don’t think i’ll be using it that often. the pavement really sucked, and there was one killer hill that i had to walk a few feet up because i couldn’t shift gears fast enough. my left quad and cardiovascular fitness weren’t really there either. i definitely plan to do more hill training, though; just maybe not on a fairly busy arterial road.
yay! my leg can do things again! (also ever since i made the blog-announcement that i was swearing off restaurants i got fatter cuz i still went to restaurants anyway but i noticed that my pants fit me a little better today vs. right before i bought the bike.)
this is not really turning into a full-blown bike/fitness blog but i really do need to be less pudgy before interview season.

it’s Baby’s First Set of Bike Tools!
i finally mapped out a route to boston that doesn’t involve going on roads with speed limits of more than 30mph, but i certainly didn’t want to go without a flat-fixing kit, since it’s a 20 mile round trip ride. i’m a moderately handy person (for a girl whose dad is totally un-handy), but i’ve never really done any bike mechanical stuff despite a couple of years of daily riding. my globe seriously needs work, and i never fixed sylvia because i had a man in my compound who fixed things for pennies.
never more! i’m ready to go. and i totally want to trick my bike out. well, not too much — i don’t want it to get stolen.

at last! after weeks of scanning craigslist ads, i finally found a beautiful vintage raleigh 10-speed mixte that was sized for my height. i never named my 3-speed globe, but i’m naming this one vera. it’s tough for me to buy american-market bikes, because i’m short — the best fitting bike i ever bought was my red bike in beijing, sylvia — but vera and i are getting along just fine. i have the rest of the summer to fix her up.
i haven’t been fooding much lately. work is crazy, i’m lifting weights again, and working hard on my leg. i did some asian-mediterranean food mashups but ate them too fast to take the pictures. :)
i wonder what i should do with my globe?!

i’m in the country. what a weekend. i rode a bike twice, hit the pool three times, and went to the driving range… i think i’m going to ask for a starter set of clubs for my birthday. i’m going to be so old. ah, i can’t wait until i can go on long rides again.
my leg is kinda behind according to my physical therapist, but it’s starting to be better. and since climbing is still somewhat out of the question, i’m getting back into lifting. nothing works the way i expect it to because i’m sadly out of shape — um, and have been getting more and more out of shape pretty much since i started lawl school.
(photo: breakfast at the village cup. oops, i kinda cut it off a bit.)

i was just going to mass dump but i decided to just do the pix from afternoon tea (warning, comes with annoying flash background sound)at the boston harbor hotel. 10 little finger sandwiches, champagne, tea, and strawberries and cream, yum. unfortunately some of the sandwich photos are a bit blurry because i was trying to shoot the different layers on which the sandwiches were stacked.
